Golf Cart Garage Door Size in Sun City, AZ

Golf Cart Garage Door Size in Sun City, AZ

Most golf cart garage doors are 5 to 6 feet wide and 6 to 7 feet tall, and that fits a standard cart with a canopy top. If your cart is lifted, has a roof rack, or you want to park it with a cover on, you want to measure the cart first and buy the door second. In Sun City, where the cart is a second car, getting this right matters more than people think.

We are a family-owned shop, not a franchise, and we have installed and repaired more golf cart garage doors in Sun City and Sun City West than anywhere else we work. A lot of those homes were built with a cart bay that was sized for the carts of the 1970s. Today's carts are taller and wider, and the door is often the thing that no longer fits.

Measure the Cart, Not the Opening

Start with the cart. Measure the tallest point, which is usually the top of the canopy or a roof-mounted rack, and the widest point, which is often the mirrors or a rear-facing seat kit. Then add clearance. You want a few inches above the tallest point so the top does not scrape the door's bottom seal, and a few inches on each side so you are not threading the needle every time you pull in. If you tow a small trailer or park with a cover on, measure with those on.

A cart on a lift kit with oversized tires can be a full foot taller than the stock version. We see this a lot with newer carts in Sun City West, and it is the main reason a cart that used to fit no longer does.

Common Golf Cart Garage Door Sizes

In our experience these are the sizes that come up most:

• 5 feet wide by 6 feet tall for the small original cart bays in older Sun City homes.

• 6 feet wide by 7 feet tall, which is the most common size we install today and handles most stock carts with room to spare.

• 8 feet wide by 7 feet tall when the bay also stores a workbench, bikes or a second cart.

Those are starting points, not rules. The real limit is your opening and the headroom above it, and that is what we come measure. If you are also thinking about a bigger door for an RV or a shop, our post on what size RV garage door you need in Arizona walks through the same measuring process for the big doors.

Headroom, Openers and Side Room

A golf cart garage door is a regular sectional door, just smaller, so it needs the same things: headroom above the opening for the tracks and springs, a few inches of side room for the vertical tracks, and a place to mount the opener. In a lot of Sun City cart bays the ceiling is low, so we use low-headroom track hardware or a wall-mounted jackshaft opener instead of a ceiling unit. A standard belt-drive opener works fine on these doors, and a smart opener lets you check from the clubhouse that you closed it.

Springs matter too. A small door still needs correctly sized torsion springs, and a door that was converted from a wider opening often has the wrong ones. We size them to the actual door weight.

A Cart Bay in Sun City West

A homeowner in Sun City West bought a new lifted cart and found it would not clear the door she had used for years. The opening itself was tall enough, but the old door had a low-headroom track that hung down into the space. We replaced it with a new insulated door, swapped the track for a tighter low-headroom kit, and moved the opener to the wall. She gained about 6 inches of clearance without touching the framing. The whole job was one visit because we carry the hardware on the truck.

The Honest Counterpoint

Sometimes the answer is that the opening is simply too small and no door will fix it. Widening a masonry opening means a contractor and a header, not a garage door company, and we will tell you that before you spend anything on a door. Also, a cart door is a real door, so an HOA in Sun City may have rules about color and style matching the main door. Check with yours, or ask us what we have seen approved on your street.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put a regular garage door opener on a golf cart garage door?

Yes. A standard opener works on a small door. If headroom is tight, a wall-mounted jackshaft opener frees up the ceiling.

Does a golf cart garage door need to be insulated?

It helps. Cart bays in Sun City often share a wall with living space, and an insulated door keeps that wall cooler and the door quieter.

My cart almost fits. Can you raise the door instead of replacing it?

Sometimes the track and opener are what is in the way, not the door. Switching to low-headroom track or a wall opener can buy several inches without replacing anything else.
