What Size RV Garage Door Do I Need in Arizona?

For most motorhomes and fifth wheels, the right RV garage door is 14 feet tall and at least 12 feet wide, and 14 by 14 is the size we install most often. Measure your rig at its tallest point, including the roof AC and antennas, and give yourself at least a foot of clearance above that.
Start With the Tallest Point of Your RV
The number in the brochure isn't always the number that matters. Most Class A motorhomes land somewhere between 12 and a half and 13 and a half feet tall once you count the rooftop AC units. Fifth wheels often run close to 13 feet. Travel trailers and Class C rigs are usually shorter, somewhere around 10 to 12 feet.
Get on a ladder with a tape measure and check the real height with the tires aired up. Then add 12 inches at minimum. That cushion covers a slight slope in the driveway, a little bounce coming in, and the next RV you buy, which is almost always taller than the last one.
Picking the Right Width
Width is about mirrors and nerves. A 12-foot-wide door works for most rigs if you can pull in straight. If you have to swing in at an angle off a narrow street or a gravel drive, go 14 feet. Those extra two feet make backing in a lot less stressful, especially at night.
Common RV door sizes we install around the West Valley:
• 12 x 14 for travel trailers and straight-in parking
• 14 x 14 for most Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels
• 14 x 16 when the owner wants room to grow or stores a boat with a tower
Don't Forget the Space Above the Door
This is the part that catches people. A tall door needs room inside the garage for the tracks and springs. With standard tracks, the door rolls back along the ceiling, so you need clearance above the opening. If the ceiling is tight, we can set up high-lift or vertical-lift tracks that run the door up the wall instead of across.
Openers matter too. A 14-foot-tall door is heavy, and a regular ceiling-mount opener on a long rail usually isn't the best fit. Most of the time we install a wall-mount jackshaft opener beside the door. It keeps the ceiling clear and handles the weight well. Our garage opener installation team can match the right unit to the door.
A Detached Shop That Almost Came Up Short
Last spring we got a text from a homeowner out past Verrado who was building a detached RV garage. The framer had already roughed in a 12-foot-tall opening, and his new fifth wheel measured just under 13 feet with the AC on top. That's a door that would never close behind the trailer.
Because we caught it before the stucco went on, the builder raised the header and we installed a 14 x 14 steel door with a jackshaft opener. If he'd called after the walls were finished, it would have been a much bigger headache. Measure the rig first, frame second, order the door third.
When a Standard Door Is Enough
Not everyone needs a full RV door. If you're storing a pop-up trailer, a camper van or a couple of side-by-sides, a 10-foot-tall door may be all you need. And if your rig lives at a storage yard most of the year, it may not make sense to rebuild a garage around it. We'll tell you honestly if a regular 16 x 8 door does the job.
It's also worth checking your HOA rules before you plan anything. Some communities limit how tall an RV garage can be or require the door to match the house.
